The corpses of two boys suspected to be twins who were reportedly left in the canal last week Friday, were recovered from the canal beside a filling station in the Ajangbadi area of Lagos by the State Police Command, and they have already begun investigation into the death of the two newborn babies.

According to Punch Metro, a crowd of residents who were drawn to the scene, was reported to have started taking snapshots of the babies before the arrival of policemen from the Ilemba Hausa division who later called the attention of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit that removed and deposited them in a mortuary.

While wondering why the residents did not act immediately when they saw the babies, a police source said that the twins were dead by the time they arrived at the scene.

“A resident alerted us to the scene. By the time we got there, the babies were already dead. There was a crowd of onlookers, some of them were taking snapshots. It is probable that the babies were dropped by their mother for reasons best known to her.

“We searched all the communities to see if we could find her or anyone who could volunteer any useful information, but we couldn’t. It is sad that while many women are looking for children, someone could take two baby boys and dump them in a canal,” he said.

SP Dolapo Badmos, who is the the State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, saying that investigation was ongoing.

“We got the information around 1pm on Friday and our operatives attached to the Ilemba Hausa division went there and saw the corpses of the infants in the canal.

We discovered that they were two corpses of newborn male babies, packed in a polythene bag and abandoned by the canal by unknown person(s).

“The corpses were removed and deposited at the Badagry General Hospital morgue for autopsy. But effort is on to track down the perpetrator(s) of the act,” she said.

    But before we so quickly condemn this woman maybe we should get off our high horses & accept that unfortunate situations like this will continue to remain rampant in a country where contraceptives are almost non existent.
    Maybe we should focus on the fact that in 2016 instead of teaching proper sex education & fighting for women’s rights to have easier access to birth control we continue to push that tried & failed idea of “abstinence”. African people are having a lot of sex & the sooner we accept that & stop pretending like we are not doing anything the better & safer we get. When Nigerians hear of “women rights” all they think of is “women will leave the kitchen, women will control men” when in reality it’s way broader than that & the lack of those rights affects every single Nigerian whether they’re consciously aware of it or not. These unfortunate twins are just another set of babies in the millions that have come before them & will come after them until one of the main issues that leads to situations like this is addressed which is, proper sex ed.
