Open Letter To Ab’obaku Of Ife (Man Who Was Supposed To Be Killed And Buried Alongside The Ooni Of Ife But Allegedly Ran Away)

Ooni-of-Ife1-599x400

Dear Abo’baku, Good day sir, wherever you may be and reading this letter. I write to you, not as a son of Ile-Ife where you held fort, but as a

true son of Oduduwa, our progenitor.

I have read in the media with utter disgust, how you braved the night and escaped from the palace of the Ooni at a time your services are most needed. Whatever informed your decision, I appeal that you reconsider your action and come back home and  be counted among true sons of the ancient kingdom and as ardent believer in the tradition from which you benefited so much since 1980 when you chose to take up the title of Ab’oba ku to Oba Sijuwade.

While you held court as the Ab’oba ku of Ife, I never for once envied your ‘exalted’ position knowing that as the Ab’oba ku, you will die alongside the king.
You knew more than I do, the demands of the office to you occupied in the palace as the Ab’obaku of the ‘Source’.  May I remind you that your job, among others, was to serve the Ooni whilst he lived and also attend to him in the afterlife.
You should be reminded of the famous Yoruba adage that says, Eyele kii b’onile je, ko b’onile mu, ko di ojo iku ko yeri, (A pigeon does not wine and dine with its owner and abandon him in death).
Already, your action has caused a lot of embarrassment not only to the royal throne of Ile-Ife, but to the entire Yoruba race. Though born many years after independence, I have not known of any of the numerous Ab’oba ku in palaces across Yorubaland that had acted the way you did.

May be you never knew, but there are fears now that many people holding similar office as you in Yorubaland could be considering what is now being regarded as “The Ab’oba ku Option;” a strange terminology in Yoruba lexicon. This, some elders say, would not only demystify the revered Yoruba culture and tradition, but could spell doom for its continued relevance.
As at last count, there are about five persons declared missing in Ile-Ife after the dreaded Oro cult went round the kingdom. Some now say if you had not absconded, there probably would be no need going after innocent souls to take your place in the burial rites.
Some are even trying to subject your action to legal interpretation but are usually reminded that the constitutionally guaranteed right to life does not extend to an Ab’oba ku in Yoruba land.

I plead of you to save Ile-Ife and the rich Yoruba culture, the embarrassment that surely will follow it due to your preference for affluence and ephemeral wealth.
Soon, there would be a coronation of another Ooni which means that that another Ab’oba ku would also accompany him to the palace. I have no doubt that anyone angling for that hitherto exalted position in the new dispensation would become an object of scorn and derision all due to your lily-livered action.
I plead that you can come out of hiding and take your rightful place in history, since the burial rites for the Oni is now over. I am sure you would come back a hero, but where you fail to show up, your action would consign your descendants to perpetual ignominy.

  1. This Ab’Obaku story ain’t real. It’s a fallacy from stupid media. I live in Ife and the Ab’Obaku is also known as Sharun of Ife. He’s in Ife and he’s ran nowhere. Nobody killed the Abobaku of Oba Aderemi (Sijuwade’s Predecessor) and nobody’s gonna kill the Abobaku to Sijuwade either. Stop painting Yorubas with bad color.

  2. Stupid talk. How is that your business what happens there?

  3. What a tradition, how can a man be killed and to be buried for an unreasonable issue.jesus christ died on the cross for us to live, granting regards to idols is useless, yoruba piple, its time 4 yu piple to know God

  4. Who then is telling lies?

  5. Fuck the Oni, you’re probably going to HELL anyway. Stupid tradition this is.

  6. it is time to change some Yoruba ancient attitudes. this is new era. we should stop abobaku and what related to it.

  7. we should now stop some stupid ideas of Yorubas. this is new era

  8. This is nothing but a stupid and none sense culture. How will you kill someone to die along with some one. Where is the Ooni now HELL or HEAVEN? No body should kill anybody for anybody. Kings and Servants are born same way, only opportunities differs. Even if you see the Abobaku YOU MUST NOT KILL HIM. … Ile-ife is known as dangerous land far before now, is not the absence of Abobaku that bring about the missing of those five that are missing. Ile-ife is known far such evil far before now.

    • I don’t quit agree with you. In as much as I am a Christian and against such rubbish and tradition. The said abo-oba kuu should have thought it well, when he was enjoying same things as the king, because of his tittle., now he should also die for his title. He knew the cost of his stupid title and enjoyed it’s dividend now is payback time., he does not like eggs soup, yet ate all the meat inside. So na me come chop the meat ?.

  9. May God have mercy on you people

  10. This is very dreadful and satanic presentation in the name of imoral and nasty traditional rites ! Where on this earht has that type of sacrisfics has happened? , Yoruba people should wakup from those of their stupid and ingerous of inconsistent tradition …. It’s inhumanity treasure for Christ sake …. Tufiaaa kwa!! And God forbid this kind of thing to happen in my land…Amen!!

  11. everyone is talking about yoruba and a nonsense culture. Abeg who post this thing. The fact that they want to follow the culture doesnt mean the entire Yoruba people are barbaric. They (the elders, chiefs n generally the leaders) believe in it, let them do it. The king was a christian, it was up to him to save the abobaku.

  12. It very very stupid too telling us that wen ooni ded day kill someone to died you gars should be. Sange let ooni go to eill

  13. First l want to know if this office of abobaku-of-ife is imposed or
Optional, if it’s optional then, that man should be fetched dead or alive to face ICPC and EFCC for obtaining by trick and secondly, if it’s imposed, theñ they should let the man be and let this culture be abolished

  14. Why don’t your tradition varnish thieves who steal government monies

  15. olabisi kofoworola

Hmmmmmm. GOD said efi ti kesari fukesari so mr abobaku of ile ife u knew such thing with happen so come out an do wot ever they ask u 2 do so eyele tiyin feba onileje oba onilemu owadi ojo iku ofekanle kole happpen u chose 2 abobaku mr come out joor

  16. he enjoyed the same things the king enjoyed while he was alive knowing that when the time comes he’s gonna have to die with the king so why abscond now? in my opinion, he’s a shame to his family

  17. a coward and he should be tried for obtaining by false pretence (section 419)
