Nigerian IGP Arase Says No To Police Impunity Establishes Complaints Response Unit (CRU)

In its continued efforts to ensure that police Brutality and misconducts especially towards the civil populace are reduced to the minimum inline with the core mandate of His administration, the inspector General of Police Solomon Arase has established a Complaints Response Unit CRU intended for the public to help in checkmating misconducts of police officers Nationwide

Briefing journalists at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, the Officer in Charge of the CRU, Abayomi Shogunle, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), said the initiative is “community- oriented complaint management system”.

He noted that the Unit is designed to provide a veritable platform for the public, to report rising cases of professional misconduct by police officers, such as torture, extortion, and taking undue advantage of the public.

The response unit, which will be officially launched by Arase on Friday, the 13 the of November 2015, will be operational in all the 36 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with the central control Room situated in Abuja Nigeria.

In his Words, “What the police leadership has done by establishing this unit, is to send a signal that…the era of impunity is over, and that professional misconducts by police officers will no longer be tolerated, and they are not supported by the management of the Nigeria Police Force.

“It is also to show that necessary actions are being taken by the force to ensure that the gap that existed between the police and the citizens, are closed up.
CSP Abayomi Shogunle also added “In a bid to win public trust and confidence, police forces…around the world are becoming more open to the citizens and the public they serve through being more open and more accountable.
“The CRU will deploy a multi-platform complaint reporting mechanism, like social media platforms the Internet and short messages services SMS through which citizens concerns and queries regarding police activities, will be addressed in real time,” the CRU head said.
