Nigeria is considering a major policy change to its tertiary education that would see graduates go for an extra year of studies.
Anthony Anwukah, the Minister of State for Education, disclosed this on Tuesday at a two-day retreat for governing councils of federal universities in Abuja.
He said this was being considered because many university graduates were not good enough to be employed by industries. He said the proposal was similar to the extra year currently being undertaken by law and medical students.
Anwukah added that the university system has let Nigeria down in the country’s quest for industrial development. He said the universities have failed to produce graduates that meet the needs of the industries.
May God Punish anyone who support this Idea. It’s because their own children are not studying in Nigeria.
Let their children and wards study in Nigerian Universities not in foreign universities. We can only support such policy when the FG changes the usual narrative about educational sector in this country. I urge the Nigerian Universities Council members not to welcome such an unethical, inhumane and nonsensical predetermined dreadful policy aimed at posing much more challenges to Nigerians most especially the less privileged ones.
If I may ask the following questions: Where are the industries that these graduates will come and work? How many of the Law and Medicine and Surgery graduates the government engages automatically upon graduation? How many industries have been established? If there are some, how many of them are functional?
Those proposing such, can’t they see that government are not support tertiary institutions with funds, no renumeration or payment of tertiary institutions’ lecturers as at when due, no increament in minimum wage bcos the standard of living is unbearable for them so they not motivated
Wisdom is different from knowledge, Egbon you are not wise ooo, u need to go back to school for extra years maybe by then you go Lear,
Permit me to use my mother language, e ti yoo sir ” you suffering from an alcoholic influence “
Please leave us,the Nigerian students alone adding extra year will NOT make any difference .people spend lesser year in other countries yet their graduates are doing very well.
Its A Shame. Please Where Did The Minister Study?
Bring your own children to Nigeria university.
Can you go beyond where your wit can carry you ?
Universities were poorly funded, and lecturers badly motivated , students grossly disadvantaged in terms of exposure and interraction with recent advances in their various callings.Let government be alive to her responsibilities rather than this bulk passing.
Nigeria minister of education no get sense.e dey talk say graduates no dey gud enough for d industries to employ .first n foremost were d work dey for d industry n who wan employ .na God go punish all of u big men wan sit for that place dey chop free money n talk any hw mk life dey hard gir pple .cos u no get sense.ur children do extra one ur gir sch .b4,u send go aboard .animal.
There are better ways of making education responsive to societal demands.
Adding another one year with the same rotten methods will be adding new wine in ok’d bottles.
The leaders are wicked. They mix education with politics of the stomach.
Thats a simple problem most African countries are having lately.
Adding another year is not the solution, but restructuring what is being learn with in present years.
In the western world, three years of university is full of lecturing, course work and home works that will bring the best out of you, but in Africa, it’s full of hand outs and bribes. Many lecturers sell hand out, and say to you that buying it give you 30%, completing your assignment is 20% and the rest 50% mark will come from the exam.
Let the lecturers be ones who are passionate about impacting students live, let them not be ones who take the job because they couldn’t get another job to do. Let them be ones that have that is worth their onion.
Lastly, there should be the introduction of practical courses, as there are too much of, ‘read to pass ‘ style of lecturing in Nigerian higher institutions.
I don’t want to reply to dis animalistic and idiotmatic talk of the foolish and selfish minister …..shwwwww
