I Knelt And Begged Him, Yet He Slaughtered My Daughter In My Presence – Mother Of Lady Murdered By Suitor

The inch-long scar on the neck of 53-year-old Mrs. Christiana Ashinwo, is one of the physical reminders of the horror of Sunday, April 24, 2016.

She sat on a chair quietly in the sitting room of a house in Agbado area of Lagos, which she built with the sweat and suffering of many years as a single mother and plank vendor. Her head was bowed when our correspondent went to meet her.

But when Mrs Ashinwo looked up, her eyes were glazed with a faraway look that would easily giveaway the fact that she could have witnessed trauma, great trauma that she obviously had yet to recover from.

Who would blame her? Watching her daughter killed before her presence, is enough to give her chills every moment for the rest of her life. The horrific incident she witnessed and survived few months ago in Kwara State remains so fresh on her mind.

Our correspondent had reported on April 30 how Mrs. Ashinwo and her daughter, 30-year-old Oluwatosin Ashinwo, an employee of MTN in Ilorin, Kwara State were attacked by a knife-wielding obsessed suitor of the young lady, 45-year-old David Ogundele.

Mrs. Ashinwo survived the attack, her daughter didn’t.

The older woman’s injuries were no less extensive, as she spent many days in the emergency unit of a hospital in Ilorin as doctors battled to save her life. She would later spend another two months in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

Our correspondent paid her a visit in Lagos, days after she was discharged and brought back home.

With a very raspy voice and intermittent cough that came out with each word, one would conclude that all was still not well with the woman, who was left for dead in the pool of her own blood in Ilorin that fateful day.

For her, the agony she feels with each morsel of food and gulp of liquid passing through her knife-damaged throat was nothing compared to the daily torment of thinking about how she lost her first child, breadwinner, and daughter.

“I knelt down to beg my daughter’s killer as he held the knife that later took my daughter’s life. I thought kneeling would pacify him,” she said.

The story Mrs. Ashinwo told was one of agony, climaxing at the moment she laid in a pool of her own blood and tried with every ounce of her waning strength to crawl to where her daughter laid lifeless.

“I was dead; I don’t know why God brought me back. But I am sure I was dead that day. I tried to crawl and touch my daughter but my strength failed. I could see she was not breathing. There was blood everywhere; mine and my daughter’s,” she said.

According to her, the day of the attack was the first time he would meet the killer, Ogundele.

Mrs. Ashinwo said, “The first time we spoke, he called me and introduced himself as Engineer David. He told me he was my daughter’s friend and I should help him to appeal to my daughter to marry him.

Mrs-Ashinwo (1)

“I was surprised but I told him that my daughter was a 30-year-old woman. She was free to make her own decision about who to marry.

“He called again some weeks later and said he and my daughter had settled the issue.

“The next time, he called, he was very angry. He said he had never been humiliated the way my daughter humiliated him. It was few days after my daughter’s birthday. He said he organised a birthday party for her and invited his friends and even bought a car as gift but she did not honour the invitation.

“I did not know what to say. My daughter already had a car and already has someone else she wanted to marry. I told him not to be annoyed and forget about the issue since my daughter had made up her mind.

“Prior to April 30, I started having some bad dreams about my daughter and became really concerned. I decided that it was time to go and check on her to know how she was doing.

“On my way to Ilorin, the man (Ogundele) called again and said as soon as I get to Ilorin, he would come and pick me at the park. I said nothing. But since I did not even know him I went straight to my daughter’s place without calling him.

“When I met my daughter, she took me to a woman, who seemed to be her confidante. We ate and the woman told me that my daughter had a fight with one man called Engineer David that day and the man threatened to kill her.

“I did not waste time; I stood up and told her I must report to the police. But my daughter told me to let the matter go. She said I was just making a big issue out of a small matter.

“She said that was why she did not like telling me some things some times. I let the matter go because I did not want to be like an overzealous mother.”

But that was one decision that would haunt Mrs. Ashinwo every second of every day.

The following day, Sunday April 30, without any hint about the danger that lurked in the shadow, she and her daughter had just got home from somewhere that day. As they entered Oluwatosin’s flat, Ogundele, who was said to be have been hiding around the flat, cornered them in the flat.

Mrs. Ashinwo said, “He entered and locked the door behind him and put the key in his pocket. I had just finished bathing when my daughter called out to me that he was in the flat. I quickly dressed and prepared to meet the man that had been disturbing me so much with calls. When I saw him, I said ‘Good day, pleased to meet you’ and he replied that, ‘there is nothing good about today.’

“As soon as I saw him, I sighted the knife he was holding. I asked him what the problem was and he kept quiet. I did not understand what was happening. He was saying so many things I did not understand. I asked him if my daughter owed him anything. I promised to pay back everything. He said she did not owe him anything. He was just angry.

“I told him that even if they offended each other, it should not be that bad that it would require the use of a knife. I told them they could still be friends. When I realised he had no intension of dropping the knife, I went down on my knees. I was begging him to drop the knife. Then, he came to where I knelt and carried me up.

“Just when I thought the issue would end, he rushed at Tosin and held her down on the bed. He started stabbing her furiously. As my daughter screamed, I rushed at him. I could not just stand and he stared stabbing me too over the body.”

By the time the attack was over, Mrs. Ashinwo had been stabbed at least 10 times in her torso, with the knife going through her throat in the

As all became quiet in the room where the dying women lay, Ogundele, dropped his weapon, the bloody knife and locked his victims in the room, Saturday PUNCH learnt.

Minutes went by as Mrs. Ashinwo tried to call out to her daughter who was bleeding from every parts of the body.

She said she was so weak she could not even call out to her daughter who had become lifeless at that point.

Lucky for her, she heard someone in a kitchen behind her daughter’s window. The woman said she used the last ounce of her strength to call the person, who later raised the alarm.

By the time the door was broken down, it was too late for Oluwatosin. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

As Mrs. Ashinwo told this story, there was no doubt it was with tremendous agony as she relived the gory details.

Saturday PUNCH had earlier reported that Ogundele was arrested in Osun on Saturday, May 14, after the police tracked him down with undercover agents.

But Mrs. Ashinwo said the police have not even contacted her to give evidence. She said she could not understand why Ogundele has not been charged to court.

The spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, said he did not have information about the prosecution of the suspect when our correspondent called him.

He said he would call back to give update about the status of the case but had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Very sad! this man is evil but ladies too need to learn from this. Stop collecting money from people you don’t want to marry: I know the diseased must have committed herself with this evil man and must have received a lot of favor from him in the past with the understanding of marriage but later disappointed the man which the mother of the diseased omitted in the story. Please ladies, stop reaping where you did not sow to avoid stories like.

Police, very slow to take action in such matters, cos dem don collect “small tin”. If na to harass innocent pple…

  18. Nigeria? That’s why jungle justice is better sometimes, police just keep mute on this? How?

  19. The guy said she owes him nothing

  20. He killed her because she rejected him. She chose another man most likely closer to her age. God bless her mom. The man should be in jail for life for murder. You can not force no one to love and marry you.

  21. But seriously I find it difficult to believe that the decease owe him nothing, it is almost not possible that a man would be angry when a lady rejects his proposal except he has spent money on her, I reserve my comment until the culprit is interviewed

  22. Adekunle Adeyemi Yetunde

    What a wicked world

  23. James Ver Tyonyion

I share your sentiment sir, a nan cannot be angry to that level because his marriage proposal has been turned down for just nothing.

  24. This story made me cry

  25. He should be burnt alive

  26. People will say she took is things… I was stalked for simply turning down an offer for relationship,, men who are obsessive and controlling don’t like their egos to be bruise…. They don’t take rejection well. And Even with all the material things he was offering her… She still refused… She saw something in him why she refused everything… I hate when people judge, she simply told him no….

  27. You at right

  28. My question is how was he able to get her mums number if they were not that close? As far as I am concern the deceased was the man’s benefactor, and the man felt undone by her choice not to accept his proposal. This is a very big lesson to ladies who go after men for their money only as I see no reason why you should take a man’s money if you cannot spend the rest of your life with him. This is a story of love turn to hate

  36. Definitely killing her was not an option, but this scene would have been avoided if she had stayed away from the man and his gift

  42. When you bear grudges overtime for same person….forgiveness becomes a sin…no one knows the pain in tha heart tha even pleading from an old woman didnt calm…we only heard the story of the killing, did we also heard about time spent together…??? I belive befor a man set for introduction in a lady’s house, they might ve gone long way….i’m against the killing honestly but such a hard earn currency in such a republic where baboons and wild animals rules, what do you expect from a comon and corrupt man to do after stressed filled years of hustling and cartering for you and you gave him a dirty payback wit disappointment….tho its so callous but nature will help you ease your pain lady….

  45. Obianuju Ndigwe Obinna-Ezenwanne

And so? Is her life worth the money he might have spent on her? He proved that he never deserved her.

  46. Toye M Moh I m not saying the guy was right to kill her, but certainly this was a very avoidable scene. It is an eye opener sha for ladies who are willing to learn

  47. Such a person can as well slaughter this woman. Is cutting of the head the medicine for headache? The man should be arrested for murder. It’s nt too late to arrest him

  48. James Ver Tyonyion

I did not actually accuse the disease but mostly that is what causes this kind of scenario. I as well advise ladies to stop extorting money from men in the name of marriage when actually they know they will not marry them.

  49. Munachimso Emmanuel Chima

Jerry there is sense in your comment even though the act is evil

  50. James Ver Tyonyion

I am not in support of what the man did but if you have the opportunity to hear from the man, you will find out that something is behind, the lady must have extorted money from the man in the name of marriage. Who knows if it was the man that gave her the Job.

  51. Munachimso Emmanuel Chima

Police is not saying anything about this case…. you know some times i dont blame those who takes laws in their hands. what if the family of the girl now payback to the guy family, the police will arrest them and charge them to court but right now there is Romance going on in the case. many have lost their conscience

  52. Kunle-Diamond Orodele

deserved or no deserved…..nothing can justified the murder of the lady. The man is a beast…he needs to be brought to book ASAP.

  53. Tope Tannymola Bayode Akinwale

My GOD,where are ? Did is too much, soooooo sad and terrible

  54. Alhaji Abdul Jabaru Ibrahim

If u don’t love the man why do u accepted to marry him,now u finish his money, u said u don’t love him, soo he kill her or she’s trying to kill him,Deadly force, or self defence here.

  55. I swear I never write on these post!!!! Some of you are very naive!!!! The things that come out of your mouth!!!!!!! I swear I have had MEN TO TRY TO HURT ME BECAUSE I DIDN’T WANT TO BE WITH THEM!!!!!!! I AM OLDER AND VERY WISER NOW. SOME TIMES JUST BEING NICE AND SAYING HELLO HAVE SOME BOYS IN THEIR FEELINGS!!!!! I SAY BOYS BECAUSE MEN DON’T HAVE TIME TO CHASE WOMEN, STALK WOMEN, TRUST ME ITS ALOT OF PEOPLE GROWN IN AGE BUT NOT THEIR MIND! HE COULDN’T HANDLE REJECTION! I NEVER OWED ANY MAN ANYTHING!

  56. Rasheedat Mohammed

When will this brutality on women end? Its so unfair, witnessing the death of one’s child n not being able to save him/her it’s very painful, I just can’t imagine it, it is an unforgetable trauma, I just pray God help the woman

  57. Prince Leo Junior

Friday Jerry, your statement is a very insensitive one. How much money is worth a life?
For no reason should you kill another…
If this lady was my sister…

  58. Alhaji Abdul Jabaru Ibrahim. Have you seen why you people love to kill. Did you read the story b/4 writing rubblish. who told you that the girl finished his money. Mr killer, The girl own her house, Car, and money b/4 the idiot want to reap were he did not sow. you’re there saying Rubblis.

  59. How did he gets her mums number? You guys should say what you know, and stop the assessment since you have not heard from both sides. How many of you can give your mum’s number to a man you owe nothing…… it is funny how many of you analyse a life changing experience, James is only saying girls should desist from extorting money if the man is not good enough to be considered as a husband

  60. Ogechukwu Victoria Alaneme

Jerry ur comment here re pointless, remember the old woman asked the man if her daughter was owing him, he said no! So why all this senseless comments, why don’t you accept the fact that men re evil!!! U want to twist the whole story, u better grow up!!!

  61. Then how did he get her mums number? even went as far as calling her on n on, that ill fated day was the first time she saw him. Your case is absolutely different, cos no lady will give a man her mums number if she aint indebted to him. The man was her benefactor shikena

  62. Ogechukwu Victoria Alaneme

If this story is real, as far as God is still on the throne this David will not know peace, his sins will hunt him down, he will live buh a dead corps will be hundred times better than him…… He will experience hell on earth….. I reserve my comments…. Even if the police will not make him pay buh God in heaven will, his ego will destroy him anwhere he his, his worthless!!!!!!!

  63. Who is naive here, I m twisting nothing, the woman side of the story ain’t enough to draw assessment, unless if it is idle to give a man u have no alliance with your mums phone number, this is just common sense.

  64. James Ver Tyonyion

Thank you Friday, we are reasoning on the same wavelength. We are not even saying that the man did the right thing but we are just advising ladies to be careful while dealing with men: extortion in the name of marriage when you know very well your heart is not with the man in question.

  65. Blessing Onikoyi

Some men “especially Yoruba men are too obsessive and controlling. Everything they do is right in their own eyes. Nobody can control them.

  66. A whole lot of u lack sense here and have refuse to understand me, it is either u are lame in mind or dumb, there is no reason whatsoever for the man to kill, but obviously there is no truth in the mum claiming her daughter owes him nothing, a lot of ladies would not give u their number not talk more of giving their mums number if they have no ties with u. Why am i surprise with this lame reply when a whole lot of girls have seen extorting men as their legal right. Mtcheeeew

  67. So because she gave him the number….its justified Mr Jerry… Even if they were an item.. She turned him down. For the things he was offering.. So she mist have seen signs…

  68. Vincent Eselebor

You have a point Friday because he was calling the lady’s mum but killing a human na wa some people are just heartless

  69. Prisca Sabbastine Temisanren

Even if the deceased owes him anything it’s not enough to take human life. How many times have we wronged God but he has never condemned any of us. Pls that act is very unfair.

  70. Dylan O Hanrahan she’s probably a feminist or something. Blaming men for everything

  71. There is no justification for murder @ all, they are both to be blamed. The guy deserves a capital punishment for taking laws into his hands, there is a learning point from this story though, may God help us

  72. Even at that was he not having sex with her.that man is an idiot.spend all his life in prison

  73. QueenEsther NJideka Onoh

    So bad!may God comfort you.

  74. Yes, what the man did is bad. But it should be a lesson to we ladies.

  75. Engr Garba Mohammed Lawal

Friday has a valid point. Most of these crimes happen when the man felt cheated, used, and been taken for a fool.
He should have left her to God for judgement

  76. Disgusting n hurtful dats too much about domestic violence against women

  77. Anitra Ladall your comment is very senseless very unrelated to my post, you lack common sense n understanding, n stop drawing assumptions from a post u dont understand good day

  78. Princess Amarachi Uzor Donald

The guy is a mental case..

  79. I expect that from you!!!!!!! Lol!!!!!

  80. Hmmmmm, so sad.

  81. Munachimso Emmanuel Chima

Anitra Ladall you expect it from him, does it mean you are a trouble maker?

  82. Even if she was his lover or ex whatever killing her is a crime against humanity and his place is jail for life if no death by hanging but yet again bush naija police says no details yet we should call back

  83. @ Anitra Ladall, no insult intended, I m very sorry if my comment in any way has offend you, I don’t comment often but this story caught my attention, n all I could gather from this story are the learning points, a whole lot of men cannot handle rejection as u rightly said and a more reason why ladies should stop extorting this men, infact all men in general unless what they confess is genuine. So sad the way her daughter lost her life, my heart goes to her n her family, I pray that this kind of event be averted…… amen

  84. D DBabylon Nzomiwu

especially 9ja girls, i don’t know why they choose to live such life and the painful part is they eat a man and named him mugu 1

  85. Guy you are absolutely on point, best comment I have seen on this post

  86. Olukunmi Adeyemo

No need to abuse one another. Friday Jerry wasn’t saying the man was right,he was only talking against likely cause of such anger. An ordinary suitor wouldn’t go this far if he hadn’t loss heavily in any way. But that is not an excuse to kill the lady. Just hear Friday Jerry idea out,he is making a whole lot of sense anyway. Don’t take money from a man or woman you know you won’t marry or a least return the money because of scenes as this.

  87. Even if she owed him heaven and earth, that shouldn’t make him take a life he didn’t create.

  88. Odinaka Roberta Eze Edeoga

And what do you think she owned him? Her Life??? What kind of useless contribution did you make…someone’s life had just been taken away ruthlessly and another severely damaged and a family pained for the rest of their lives??? You heartless commenter

  89. You that is making useful contribution bring her back to life with ur useful comment dumb head. Heartful commenter indeed…… nonsense

  90. later stupid people will be asking why some ladies & guys are still single

  91. Lady watch him killed your daughter and dont try to kill him must be a beast!!

  92. Why re you embarrassing urself here…cnt you allow the law to handle this properly ….rather than such primitive and disgusting courses here

  93. Ezeani Amarachi Maria

Like seriously Jerry his evil even if he spent the whole world that doesn’t give he the right to kill someone

  94. Munawwar Muhammad Ibrahim

Friday Jerry haba how much will she own him to warrant such pls that means u can do fat, as a man dat d best u can do to differentiate between u and others sharing nd given is luv, am sure u can KILL for money

  95. Believe me, no man in his rightful senses will kill just like that. Something Is wrong somewhere. That man must be a wizard or he was bewitched and manipulated to do what he did. No amount of money spent on a lady Is worth her life. Even if you gave her the whole world. What a painful exit.

  96. He must be punished for doing that right in ur presence after begging him as well not to

  97. I dey notice sumtin hia’ na pple wey dey collect money from dia partner dey defend dis issue’ must he gv her heaven nd earth b4 she is qualified to be kill

  98. u dey dia?
