The corpse of the military officer, Francis Atisu Vondee, who died in a car crash with Ghanaian dancehall artiste Ebony, will face court-martial.
It was gathered from Burma camp that the Lance corporal asked for a sick leave but ended up in Mankranso, where he met his untimely death.
According to the sources at the military high command, Vondee who was in a military uniform at the time of the accident, was not officially deployed for the bodyguard duties.
At the end of investigations, his body will be court-martialed and possibly sentenced to 40 days in the military guardroom, in line with the laws and statutes governing the Ghana Army.
Being dead, his uniform will be hanged in the guardroom for 40 days after which his body be released to the family for burial. His family “could also be denied his benefits” due him, including insurance packages.
It is very unlikely a dead body or his uniform would be put on trial or put in a guard room. That would be ridiculous and make no sense. However, there may be an inquest or similar hearing into cause of the soldiers death and a report made. The purpose of the report being for record and legal purposes. If indeed any punitive action or decision is made, this would be to serve as a deterrent against anyone who may want to embark on a similar mission in future.
I am a Nigerian and wish we had a swift and coherent policy that would apply across the board.
The Army is same everywhere after all. AWOL is AWOL everywhere in the world. Guilty as charged but RIP to the dead soldier.
In foreign movies, even those you attempted betuaring their country are given honorary burial just for the face of their family to be saved from public shame while their records show the actual cause of death…….I want to believe it’s obtainable in real life….can’t the African system do same esp when he has been a good solider all life long but made just one mistake??? I know he knew the rules but what happened to empathy??
